1.Nomadic Journey of Art
Vertraute Gassen. Heimatstadt Wien. Der touristische Blick - längst
unser Blick geworden.

1. Nomadic Journey of Art
Familiar streets. Vienna, our city. The view of the tourist has become our own a long
time ago. Imperial buildings and coffee houses – this is our Vienna. Our everyday life,
however, is lived amongst sober urban architecture, in the high-tech subway, in
Segafredo or Starbucks. We recognize Vienna by the silhouette of the Stephansdom,
not by the skyline of the new skyscrapers.
Viviana Furlanetto’s photos completely capture our city. Even if it is almost only
Venice which has been photographed.
A small Fly Niki, part of the inscription on the Essl museum in Klosterneuburg, the
reflection of our Nitsch’ on the glass pane…It would be interesting to know how
somebody who has never been to Vienna sees these photos….
In them we find our identity.
But why do they also lead us to the places where we ourselves were also
once strangers?

2.Hermann Nitsch
“Much of my work has been completed. The breaking free from norms, the almost
victim like exhibistionistic downturn has often been achieved, far from the realms
of shame, in the overpersonal dionystic worlds-Eros, in the darkness of chaotic
forces.(1) “
Hermann Nitsch, one of the internationally most important Austrian artists, is almost as
popular in Italy as here.
Viviana Furlanetto has worked with Nitsch, taken photographs for him. Her works can be found
in the series “Hermann Nitsch. 2005 Burgtheater Vienna (2)” and in “Nitsch the pedagogue (3)”.
When I think of the original prints, which I was briefly allowed to see, I especially
remember the distant gaze, something untouched with one important difference: the distance,
which was thought to be an essential precondition for such cool photography “far from the
realms of shame”, is missing.

3.Intimità
"Photography implies that we are informed about the world, when we accept it such as it is
viewed by the camera. That however is the opposite of understanding, which begins with
accepting not the world in the way it is viewed by the oberserver. Every possible form of
understanding stems from the ability to say no. Actually a photo can never really be understood. (1)”
The three levels in Furlanetto’s photos create a highly complex puzzle with the simplest
of means.
-The sex, which withdraws itself from sight, body hair which is becoming an
evergrowing taboo and which is aesthetically still just accepted as decoration.
-The second level of gauze, the material which simultaneously hides and reveals, becomes
diaper and bandage, curtain which protects from curious looks and lets the sun’s rays pass…
-The third level, a trivial subject but broken: the mixing of baroque opulence, undefined ice
and jelly, pepperoni between baroque chocolate decorations and glacé cherries, squashed
tomatoes.
Intimacy cannot be photographed. Intimacy is expressed through a secret. Viviana
Furlanetto’s contribution brings a new language to our exhibition, a delicate and light,
cool and sensual metapher.
